New drone legislation from July 15, 2024: What you need to know

Everything you need to know about drones: New legislation, tips and tricks

Drones have become increasingly popular in recent years, and their use is spreading not only among professionals but also among hobbyists. This brings a need to better understand the legislation and rules related to drones.

Specific changes in drone legislation from July 15, 2024

As of July 15, 2024, new legislative changes regarding drone operation come into force. These changes concern registration, insurance, pilot exams and flight rules. Our article gives you a detailed overview of everything you need to know about flying drones, including DJI drones.

1. New pilot certificates

As of July 15, 2024, all old pilot certificates issued by the Transport Authority will no longer be valid. All pilots will have to obtain new certificates for the A1/A3 or A2 categories. These categories target different levels of experience and types of flying.

A1/A3: These categories are intended for recreational pilots and those who fly smaller drones in open areas. The exams for these categories test basic knowledge of flight rules, safety and the law.

A2: This category is intended for pilots who fly closer to people and populated areas. The exams for this category are more demanding and require a deeper understanding of the rules and safety procedures.

2. No more distinction for aerial work

The new legislation abolishes the “Aerial work” category for unmanned aircraft (PVLP). This removes the distinction between hobby and commercial flying. All pilots, regardless of the purpose of the flight, must follow the same rules and conditions.

3. Fees for registration and exams

As of July 15, 2024, registering operators and drones with the Transport Authority will cost 35 euros. Pilot exams will cost 30 euros. Until that date, these services are free of charge, giving operators and pilots time to adapt to the new rules without additional costs.

4. Insurance for C0 and C1 drones

Drones in the C0 and C1 categories (up to 250 g) will no longer need to be insured. This simplification reduces the administrative and financial burden for users of smaller drones, which pose a lower risk.

5. Higher fines

The legislation also brings higher fines for non-compliance. The maximum fine will be 5,000 euros for individuals and 20,000 euros for companies. The higher fines aim to improve compliance with the rules and safety measures.

6. Serial number registration

As of July 15, 2024, it will also be mandatory to register drone serial numbers (SN) with the Transport Authority. This requirement ensures better control and traceability of drones, helping to identify and regulate their use.

The new legislation brings significant changes that increase safety and control over the use of drones. Drone users, including those flying DJI drones, should be familiar with these changes and ensure compliance with the new requirements.

DJI drones

DJI is the leading drone manufacturer on the market, known for its innovative technology and reliable products. The most popular models include the DJI Phantom, DJI Mavic, DJI Inspire and DJI Mini. Each of these drones has its own specifications and suits different skill levels and needs.

1. DJI Phantom - Ideal for professional photography and videography.

2. DJI Mavic - Compact and portable, suitable for travel and outdoor activities.

3. DJI Inspire - Designed for filmmakers and video production professionals.

4. DJI Mini - Perfect for beginners looking for a light and simple drone.

A1/A3 pilot exams

Pilots must pass pilot exams for the A1 and A3 categories. These exams test the knowledge required to fly drones safely.

Drone flight rules

Maximum altitude: 120 meters above ground.

Flying in populated areas: Prohibited without special permission.

Visibility: The drone must always be within the pilot's line of sight.

Pre-flight preparation
